What is occupational health and safety?

Occupational health and safety is a system set up to ensure all workers are provided a safe and healthy workplace. In Ontario, the Occupational Health and Safety Act provides the legal framework, setting out the rights and duties of all parties in the workplace.

What are occupational health and safety procedures?

In Ontario workplaces in which more than five workers are regularly employed, employers are required to prepare a written occupational health and safety policy, review that policy at least once a year and set up and maintain a program to implement it. An organizations health and safety program will outline the occupational health and safety procedures in the workplace.

What training is required for occupational health and safety?

In Ontario, all workers are required to complete worker awareness training. This training provides information to workers on the Occupational Health and Safety Act. All workers are also required to complete Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training. Supervisors must complete training to prove they are competent under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Workers are also required to be trained on the organizations health and safety program, and workplace violence and harassment program. Additional task or job specific training is also required depending on the tools, equipment, machinery etc. used in the workplace.
