As many kids are heading back to school, it is important to remind ourselves to be cautious and follow these safety tips as more children are on the roads heading to school:

· Reduce speeds in school zones and be ready to stop at any time. Children do not always notice oncoming traffic
· Always obey school bus signals
· Be patient. With road and sidewalk changes, pedestrians – especially young children, seniors and those with disabilities – may need more time to cross the road

· Be alert. Do not practice distracted driving, stay focused on the road, and aware of your surroundings
· Take extra caution near construction zones. Keep an eye out for fencing, traffic cones or moving equipment and machinery
· Pedestrians should not ever enter a construction zone with which you are unaffiliated. Stick to the sidewalks and leave construction sites to construction workers
· Watch for pedestrian crosswalks, and obey them when in use · When walking always cross at intersections, looking and listening for traffic and walk across only when road is clear and safe to do so
· Make eye contact with drivers before crossing
· Pedestrian should always walk on available sidewalks · Always follow direction from crossing guards, student crossing patrols and school bus operator’s signals
