Working at Heights Training- Deadline Extension

The Ministry of Labour (MOL) has extended the deadline for Working at Heights (WAH) from April 1st, 2017 to October 1st, 2017 with the following specific conditions. The worker needs to have completed a fall protection training course before April 1st, 2015; The worker must be enrolled in a Working at Heights program that needs to be completed by October 1st, 2017.

MOL “Critical Injury” Definition Clarification

The ministry of labour released a clarification on the definition of a critical injury: Clause 1(d) of Regulation 834 stipulates that an injury of a serious nature is a "critical injury" if it involves the fracture of a leg or arm but not a finger or toe. Investigate Every Accident

Whenever an accident occurs on site, it is imperative that a thorough investigation is completed and documented. Not all accidents will result in a WSIB claim, for example if the worker only received first aid, and does not lose time from work, a report to WSIB is not required.

Ministry of Labour (MOL) Chemical Handling Blitz

From September 19 to October 31, Ministry of Labour (MOL) inspectors will focus on chemical handling to check that employers have taken the proper steps to protect workers from chemical hazards. To prepare for this blitz: Ensure you have up to date WHMIS training records available for all workers Ensure controls and use of personal protective equipment is practiced by all workers Ensure chemicals are stored and handled safely, and workers are following proper procedures Ensure emergency procedures in case of spills, body splash or contact with skin and eyes, is in place and communicated to all workers Chemicals in the workplace can be extremely hazardous if workers are not trained, and do not take the proper safety precautions.

Bill 132 Changes to Workplace Violence and Harassment Legislation

On September 8, 2016 Bill 132, an update to Ontario’s sexual violence and harassment legislation becomes law. Bill 132 amended the current workplace violence and harassment legislation (section 32 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act) to include workplace sexual harassment as well as additional provisions requiring employers to implement specific workplace harassment policies and programs that will ensure all complaints are properly investigated.

When do you need to report an incident to the WSIB?

Employers are required to report an incident to the WSIB within 3 days if the worker: Loses time from work, or Earns less than a regular day’s pay, or Gets health care treatment (doctor, emergency room, walk-in clinic etc.), or Requires modified duties with full pay for more than 7 days Employers are not required to report the incident to the WSIB if the worker only needs first aid, and returns to work.
